Eckington Shorts

I just reviewed the posts for the month and realized that the focus has been almost exclusively on crime. How did that happen? On the way to work this morning there were a half dozen cops between RI ave and the Harry Thomas Rec Center standing in the rain. One was a Lt. that was at our PSA meeting, who seems to be a good cop.

Visit this great post by Velvet in Dupont on several of her interactions with MPD and 311.

Here is a note from Miss Cleopatra Jones:

Dear Constituents/ Neighbors;

Smile you are on camera! Hard work has benefitted the community. Surveillance cameras to deter crime are up on the corner of Lincoln Road & R. Street, NE. The community will be getting more cameras installed, I will give you an up-date as cameras pop -up.

I just hope that these cameras are as effective as the proponents believe they will be.

Election season blues. I am saddened to see that once again we have very little choice in the mayoral race. Wouldn't it be great to have seriously talented candidates vying for the top spot? Instead we have an inexperienced young lawyer who has been admonished twice for being inept; and a woman who has been part of the problem for the last 20 years.

How are Fenty or Cropp really going to change the city for the good? Have either of them been a positive influence on the city during their tenures in City Council?

Marie Johns?

I don't know what to do either. I guess the question really comes down to do you want to take a risk on a young, energetic and chap with aforemention admonishments-- or, go for the status quo of some portion of the darker days of DC that appears to be quite lazy by comparison?

I would lean Fenty, but the whole Sinclair Skinner thing makes me really uneasy and I don't think I can vote Fenty:

Maybe I'll pick some inanimate object to write-in.

I would love to vote for Marie Johns, but she seems to be shut out of the race.

Why is it that you guys see Linda Cropp as being part of the problem? The fact that she has experience does put her in the government during the "darker days", but isnt that true for most folks that should be noted qualified for Mayor? I see a woman who has helped to lead this city OUT of those days, and keep it there during a chairmanship over the past 10 years, and who has earned a level of respect for that among the bond markets and Congress. Just my two cents, but the reason that my vote will go her way for sure. Fenty is just too scary.

Regarding the reaction to Cleopatra Jones's posting, the guy's statement is a bit unfair, but that resident apparently believes that the cameras are not the answer, and that community policing would be more helpful. I don't think Jones asked anyone what they thought about cameras (or anything else about crime).

Don't forget there is a Republican candidate, if you want real choice. His name is Dave Kranich. There is a televised interview on his website.
